Centre Summary

THE CENTRE FOR RUPERT’S LAND STUDIES BUSINESS PLAN
Executive Summary June 2006

The Centre for Rupert’s Land Studies is an internationally respected Centre of Excellence, located in The University of Winnipeg. The Centre fosters interdisciplinary research and communication on the history and peoples of Rupert’s Land, with a particular emphasis on fur trade and Aboriginal history. It is unique in its focus on Rupert’s Land, the vast Hudson Bay watershed claimed by the Hudson’s Bay Company from 1670 to 1870. The Aboriginal/ European relationships formed in this period are seminal to our history. Their legacy still affects the entire region, as issues surrounding resource use, land claims, ethnic affiliations and identity, and the maintaining of heritage affect communities and the making of public policy today.

Present and Future Needs
Recruitment of the next director is a primary concern for the future. The Centre needs to attract a scholar of outstanding quality in the relevant fields to allow it to maintain and expand its unique role in developing community outreach and research capacity. Over twenty years, the Centre has experienced steady growth to the point where its directorship requires a half-time faculty position. The position will entail a combination of half-time teaching and half-time CRLS administration, backed by university and departmental budgeting to allow the director to continue the Centre’s significant research, mentoring, and publications programs.

Partial Endowment of the Directorship
Endowment of the Director’s half-time course release will require close to $1,000,000 capital. The University administration at times covers such releases with sessional lecturers or internal budget allocations. However, this position requires permanence and the stature of a professorial appointment. The present fund raising campaign by the University of Winnipeg offers an extraordinary opportunity to build an endowment through public and private donations. Volunteers from the Centre’s membership are now working with the Foundation to tailor a campaign aimed at raising the $1,000,000 capital for a half-time endowment.

The Organization
The Centre for Rupert’s Land Studies reports to the University’s Vice-President (Academic) to whom it is accountable financially and in all other ways. The director must be a full-time faculty member. The Centre receives partial funding from the University and from memberships and donations. It is guided by an Advisory Council which includes four University of Winnipeg faculty members, and the Chief of the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives. Four members represent other institutions linked with the centre’s interests and activities, and four represent the general membership. A volunteer treasurer assists with financial records. The Centre has constant and growing demands for its expertise, meeting requests for:
